As the title says (and as you can see below), most of the pictures I shot using Lucky SHD 400 on my F601 have light leaks, I am not sure why it happened but I have a theory.
The F601 has a small window that lets you see what film stock is inside the camera at any given time (and if the camera is empty, I suppose). Lucky films come in plastic canisters instead of metal canisters which are used by most manufacturers (all others as far as I’m aware), if the canisters are not only plastic but also slightly smaller, it would mean the window light seal is not making proper contact with the canister and therefore not blocking light, causing weirdly consistent leaks.
Do I have proof? No. Can I test my claim and therefore get proof? Yes, but that would mean taking my digital calipers out of my tool drawer and I don’t feel like doing that. I guess the below could be considered evidence, it’s Fujicolor 400 shot on the same F601 and none of the pictures have those evil light leaks:
What will the remediation be going forward?
I could either use my Nikon F which does not have a window, but that would mean:
- Learning to focus manually.
- Learning to expose properly (i.e. without a microcontroller saving my ass).
- Changing shutter speed manually whenever conditions change.
Or I could just put electric tape over the window :)
